Over Memorial Day Weekend, Shaun Gardner demonstrated extraordinary dedication and resilience by completing 21 rounds of the Murph challenge in 24 hours, raising over $10,000 for WarriorWOD. This remarkable achievement not only highlights Shaun’s strength and endurance but also significantly supports our mission of helping veterans heal through fitness and community.
The Murph Challenge: The Murph challenge, named after Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL who lost his life in Afghanistan, consists of a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another 1-mile run, all while wearing a 20-pound vest. Completing one round of Murph is a testament to physical and mental toughness, but Shaun Gardner took this challenge to another level by completing 21 rounds in 24 hours.
Shaun Gardner’s Journey and Preparation: Shaun’s commitment to WarriorWOD and the veteran community is truly inspiring. His rigorous preparation involved extensive physical training and mental fortitude. Shaun shared that his workout playlist varied with his mood, ranging from intense, aggressive beats to motivational audio books like Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning.” This variety helped him stay focused and inspired during the grueling 24-hour challenge.
Balancing Life and Training: Shaun emphasized the importance of balancing his family life and work with his training. He strives to spend quality time with his family daily and remains task-oriented, always seeking to improve himself both physically and mentally. His preparation for the Murph challenge included managing hand injuries from pull-ups and developing strategies for pacing and recovery.
What Drives Shaun: Shaun is driven by a desire to push his limits and avoid the mental anguish that comes from self-reflection. He believes in confronting pain and challenges head-on to grow stronger. His reflections on his military career and the importance of not tying one’s identity solely to their job highlight the depth of his personal journey.
Shaun’s Reflections Post-Event: Shaun expressed his gratitude after the event, saying: “I wanted to take a quick minute to offer my humble gratitude towards everyone who helped out this past weekend. We raised over $10k, which will put 7 Vet’s through the Warrior WOD program and hopefully help them regain a foothold on life. Besides the great workouts and coaching at our gym, we’re also fortunate to have a great Community comprised of individuals with a similar mindset. Our Community fosters camaraderie and the encouragement of others. I have to remind myself that this type of mindset / behavior is the exception and not the norm. I’ve been mentoring Vet’s in the program for the past 6 months and have found that most people have little to no support and hardly ever receive encouragement from others. People need so little encouragement in life to keep moving forward, but hardly receive any. We’re blessed to be in an environment where we’re all constantly rooting for one another and celebrating each other’s successes. What if we can take this behavior outside of the gym? What if we can offer one other person a small piece of encouragement every day? What difference will this make? I sometimes get lost in the idea of large action is needed for large results. Although this is sometimes true, the reality is that small actions done consistently over time will always yield the biggest results.”
Impact of the Funds Raised: The $10,000 raised by Shaun’s Murph challenge will significantly benefit WarriorWOD by:
- Expanding Fitness Programs: Providing more veterans with access to fitness programs tailored to their needs.
- Enhancing Nutrition Coaching: Offering personalized nutrition plans and coaching to improve overall mental and physical health.
- Strengthening Peer Support Networks: Growing our Battle Buddy program to ensure every veteran has a peer supporter.
